MANY YEARS AGO Radical Reality
met a man named Don Brewster, who was from Rocklin, California. Don ran a summer sports camp for inner
city youth and taught the kids sports skills, but more importantly, life skills. He ended the week of camp by allowing individuals who had overcome hardships to share their stories. Joey Steelman, Juaquin Fabela and I had the opportunity to be a part of the camps. Radical Reality broke bricks, ripped phone books, and bent frying pans then followed the demonstration with a a motivational message.
Don and his wife have since moved to Cambodia where they work to rescue young girls out of the sex slave trade.
The organization they work with found a way to buy two brothels and free the girls that were working in them. They were able
to turn one of the buildings into a home for these girls.
Deciding on what to do with the other building, Don felt the need to
reach out to the young men and the pimps who were selling the young girls. In the
Cambodian culture people seem to respect size and strength so Don felt that he should open a Gym. After meeting
with Doug Bird, the founder of the type of gym they wanted to open, several times, I
agreed to go Cambodia to help open the Gym and participate in other Radical
Reality events there as well. Dean Johnson, another member of Radical Reality
agreed to go with me.
The time then came for Dean and I to start our 21-hour flight across the world to Southeast Asia. Walking off the plane, the first thing I noticed was the intense heat and humidity. As we drove through Cambodia we noticed the poverty and poor conditions in which the people were living. The average worker in Cambodia works 12-13 hour days and makes less than $1.00 a day. Also evident were the hundreds of brothels lining the
streets. Sadly, the girls “working” in them are between the ages of 5 and 16 years. Dean and I were anxious to meet the men doing this to these young girls. We will never forget our guide's words as we toured Svay Pak. He pointed to a group of young men and said, “There are your pimps.” To our amazement, they were teenagers!
Dean and I performed a successful Radical Reality event at the gym. We shared our stories of hope and a way out. We even had the opportunity to speak to the drug dealers and pimps as we spent time training them at the gym.
The highlight for both Dean and I was on the last day of the trip. We were able to visit the two secret homes where the rescued girls lived. We performed feats for them and encouraged them. It was so powerful to listen to the very painful stories of the things these girls had been through. It was just as powerful to see they were now out of that lifestyle. Their faces lit up with smiles when they spoke of how they had been rescued. The day before we went to the secret house, I had sent my wife an email about where we were going, and she told me to hug the girls and tell them she
loved them.
At the end of our time there, I told the girls what my wife had said. Their response was so moving, with tears running down their faces they stood up and clapped. It truly means so much to them that we care. Without question, the hardest part of the trip was when it was time to say goodbye. People crowded into the streets to see us off. They made us promise to come back and not to forget them, and that is one
promise I will not break.
